IP65 Panel in Saudi Heat: Choosing IP Ratings and Cooling
An IP65 panel in Saudi heat keeps dust and water jets out, but it also keeps heat in. Choose the IP rating from the environment, then size cooling from the heat the equipment gives off and the outside temperature. IP55 is often enough indoors, IP65 suits washdown and dusty yards, and coastal sites need stainless steel.

What do IP ratings mean for a control panel?
An IP code under IEC 60529 has two digits. The first digit rates protection against solid objects and dust. The second rates protection against water.
| Code | Dust (first digit) | Water (second digit) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP31 | Objects over 2.5 mm | Dripping water | Clean, dry switch room |
| IP42 | Objects over 1 mm | Dripping, tilted 15 degrees | Indoor plant rooms |
| IP54 | Dust-protected | Splashing water | Indoor, dusty areas |
| IP55 | Dust-protected | Water jets | Indoor washdown, dusty plant |
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Water jets | Outdoor, hosed-down areas |
| IP66 | Dust-tight | Powerful water jets | Heavy washdown, exposed yards |
"Dust-protected" allows a small amount of dust in. "Dust-tight" allows none. A panel at IP65 needs a sealed door, gasketed gland plates and, for ventilation, a sealed route, such as a cooling unit.
IP rating is not the same as corrosion resistance. A painted IP65 box can still rust in coastal air, so material and coating are selected separately.
How does an IP65 panel in Saudi heat behave in humid coastal air?
Four conditions drive the decision.
- Summer ambient. Site temperatures reach the mid-40s degrees Celsius, and a panel in direct sun runs hotter than the air.
- Humidity. Coastal areas around Dammam, Al Khobar and Jubail see high humidity, which raises the risk of condensation when a cool panel meets warm moist air.
- Dust and sand. Fine dust enters through any open vent and settles on terminals and fans.
- Salt. Air near the Gulf carries salt, which attacks mild steel and zinc coatings.
A sealed IP65 enclosure solves dust and spray, but trapped heat from drives, transformers and power supplies has nowhere to go. Component data sheets give a maximum operating temperature, so the interior must stay below it.
Worked example: cooling a VFD panel in 45 degree heat
Worked example: the figures here are made up to show the calculation. A VFD panel has an enclosure surface area of 4.2 m² exposed to air and dissipates 900 W. The site ambient is 45 °C and the interior must stay at or below 50 °C.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Allowed temperature rise | 50 − 45 | 5 K |
| Heat passing through the walls | k × A × ΔT = 5.5 × 4.2 × 5 | about 115 W |
| Heat to remove by cooling | 900 − 115 | about 785 W |
| Margin for sun load and ageing, 20 percent | 785 × 1.2 | about 940 W |
| Selected cooling | Unit rated at or above 940 W at 45 °C ambient | Cooling unit, check rating curve |
The value 5.5 W/m²K is a common planning figure for painted sheet steel. The same calculation without cooling gives an interior rise of 900 ÷ (5.5 × 4.2) = 39 K, which would put the inside near 84 °C. That is far above what a drive tolerates. The numbers explain why an IP65 panel in Saudi heat needs a cooling plan from the start.
Add a sun shield for outdoor panels, since direct sun adds a few kelvin to the surface. Use a thermostat-controlled heater inside to prevent condensation when the panel is idle at night.
Which enclosure and material suit which site?
Match material to the worst exposure.
- Painted steel, IP54 to IP55. Indoor plant rooms and switch rooms with air conditioning.
- Painted steel, IP65. Sheltered outdoor locations away from the coast.
- Stainless steel SS304, IP65 or IP66. Washdown areas and inland outdoor sites.
- Stainless steel SS316, IP66. Coastal, marine and chemical-exposure sites, where chloride attack is the risk.
Our stainless steel and outdoor panels are built in SS304 or SS316 to IP55 up to IP66, with a typical lead time of three to five weeks. The stainless steel and outdoor panels page covers the range. For modular system enclosures with tested ratings, we build with Rittal TS8, AX and VX25 enclosures as well as local enclosures, from IP31 to IP66; see Rittal enclosure panel building. Panels with drives also need a heat budget, which the VFD panels page discusses.
How should you specify a panel for an Eastern Province site?
Give the builder five facts and the choice becomes clear.
- Location. Indoor, outdoor sheltered, outdoor exposed, coastal or inland.
- Maximum ambient temperature and whether the panel sits in direct sun.
- Heat sources. List drives, power supplies, transformers and their losses in watts.
- Washdown or chemical exposure. Name the cleaning agent if there is one.
- Access. Front only, or front and rear, since gland plates and cooling units use space.
Plants across the region face these conditions, and the same specification works for each. We build and test for Eastern Province projects from our Dammam workshop, so a panel is checked for the site before it leaves.
Questions about IP ratings and heat
What does IP65 mean on a control panel?
IP65 means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction, under IEC 60529. It does not mean the panel is watertight under immersion, resistant to corrosion, or cool inside, which are separate design points.
Is IP65 enough for outdoor panels in Saudi Arabia?
For dust and rain, yes. For heat, not on its own: a sealed enclosure needs cooling sized to the internal losses. Near the coast, add stainless steel SS316 or a suitable coating, and a sun shield to reduce solar gain.
What is the difference between IP55 and IP65?
Both resist water jets. IP55 is dust-protected, so a little dust can enter. IP65 is dust-tight, so none can. IP65 needs tighter seals and usually active cooling, because it cannot breathe through vents like an IP55 box.
Do panels in Eastern Province need air conditioning?
Not always. Panels with low heat load can rely on wall dissipation and a sun shield. Panels with drives or dense equipment often need a cooling unit or heat exchanger. The cooling calculation above decides.
How long does an IP65 stainless panel take to build?
Stainless steel and outdoor panels typically take three to five weeks from approved drawings. Your quotation, issued within one working day, states the date for your size and IP rating.
