What makes a panel a marine panel?

A marine panel works in an environment that ordinary industrial panels are not built for: salt-laden air, constant humidity, wide temperature swings and a structure that moves. Class societies also require evidence. The design, the materials and the components must meet the rules of the society that classes the vessel or unit, and a surveyor may need to inspect the build and witness the test. A marine panel is therefore as much about documentation and traceability as about the steel and the wiring.

Which classification societies do you build to?

Classification is the set of rules that a vessel or offshore unit is built and surveyed against. We build to Lloyd's Register (LR) Rules for Classification, and to RINA and ABS classification requirements. Which society applies to your panel depends on the vessel or unit. We start by asking for your class notation and the society's approved drawing list, then design the panel to the rule set, submit drawings for class approval through you and build only to the approved revision.

IEC 60092 is the reference series for electrical installations in ships, and IEC 60092-302 covers low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. We apply it with the class rules.

Marine control panel manufacturer: what we deliver

The table sets out the scope. Every item is built to the class and the drawings you supply.

Panel Rating Standard Lead time
Marine control and motor starter panels To project specification, fixed or withdrawable starters, DOL, star-delta, soft-starter and drive feeders IEC 60092-302; IEC 61439-1/-2; class rules 2–4 weeks
Offshore and jetty control panels To project specification, with stainless steel or marine-grade enclosures Class rules; IEC 60529 2–4 weeks
Stainless steel enclosures SS316, IP55–IP66, passivated after welding IEC 60529 3–5 weeks
Distribution and lighting boards Marine boards up to 800 A IEC 60092-302; class rules 1–2 weeks
Documentation Class drawing set, material and component certificates, test record Class rules Part of build time
Factory acceptance test Routine verification, with class surveyor or customer witness if requested IEC 61439-1/-2; class rules Included in build time

We build with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components, mounted in Rittal enclosures or in enclosures we fabricate, and choose class-recognised component ranges where your class notation requires them.

How do marine panels differ from industrial panels?

The main differences are in the details that stop corrosion and failure at sea:

  • Materials. SS316 or marine-grade coated enclosures, stainless fasteners and hinges, and anti-corrosion treatment of every cut edge.
  • Protection. Higher IP ratings on exposed decks and in washdown areas, with drip shields over openings.
  • Cabling. Cable that meets flame-retardant requirements, glands rated for the cable type and the deck location, and clear termination labelling.
  • Heat. Panels sized for the higher ambient temperature that the class rules specify, with the cooling designed in rather than added.
  • Traceability. Each component and sheet linked back to a certificate that the surveyor can inspect.

How is a marine panel built, tested and delivered?

  1. Enquiry. You send the class notation, the single-line diagram and the vessel or unit approval drawings.
  2. Site data. We confirm the location on board or offshore, the ambient conditions and the cable entries.
  3. Design. We issue the drawings for submission to the classification society, and revise them against the society's comments.
  4. Build. The panel is fabricated and wired in the Dammam workshop from the approved revision, with component certificates filed against the bill of materials.
  5. Factory acceptance test. We carry out the routine verification. You, your inspector or the class surveyor can witness the test.
  6. Delivery. The panel is packed for sea or road transport and delivered to the yard, jetty or vessel.
  7. Documentation. You receive as-built drawings, the test record and the certificate pack.
  8. Support. We remain available for spare parts and surveys.

Where we supply marine and offshore panels

Saudi Control Panels Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2000 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. We have worked on projects for all three, and we hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification. Our our Dallah Industrial workshop in Dammam builds more than 150 panels a month.

Panels go to workboats, tugs, barges and supply vessels, shipyards and repair yards, jetties and loading arms, and offshore units working in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, with ports at Dammam, Jubail, Yanbu and Jeddah. We deliver to every region of Saudi Arabia, and we respond to site requests in the Eastern Province within one working day. For plants onshore, see our stainless steel and outdoor panels and our work for oil and gas. Test planning for class surveys sits within our panel FAT and testing service.

Marine control panel questions

Who provides marine control panel manufacturing in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Control Panels Company provides marine panels from its Dammam workshop, built to LR, RINA and ABS classification requirements with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We have been active since 2000 and are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.

What affects the cost of a marine panel?

The main factors are the classification society and notation, the panel rating and starter types, the enclosure material and IP rating, the class-recognised components specified, the certification pack and the survey attendance. Send your class notation and drawings, and the proposal sets out a price for each against your specification.

How long does marine panel delivery take?

The typical lead time for a custom marine panel is 2–4 weeks from approved drawings. Class approval of the drawings sits before the build clock starts and can take longer than the build itself, so send the class drawing list early.

Can a class surveyor witness the factory test?

Yes. We give the surveyor the test procedure in advance, agree a date that suits the survey and the build, and keep the component certificates and test record ready for inspection. The surveyor's comments are recorded and closed out before the panel ships.

Do you build panels for offshore units as well as vessels?

Yes. We build to the class of the offshore unit or the vessel. We design the enclosure material, IP rating and cooling for the exposure, and issue the same class documentation pack in both cases.

What should I send to get a quotation?

Send your single-line diagram, panel schedule or class-approved drawings, with the class notation and the location of the panel on board. The proposal then sets out scope, standard, lead time and price.
